For a Blue Flag beach in Portugal that a wheelchair can actually reach, use the 2026 Praia Acessível award, not a guess from the sand. The award asks for a step-free walk from the road, reserved parking, a firm path or beach treadmills, adapted toilets, a lifeguard, and a route toward the water. An amphibious chair is recommended. It is not guaranteed. Lifeguard and access details come from each beach's Blue Flag entry; check the path and the chair on arrival. These beaches also hold a Blue Flag certification, which is a separate award. More of the coast is in the Portugal guide.
Airport distances below are straight-line kilometres, not a drive or a bus ride.
What you should find on an awarded beach
The IDiPD programme page, updated on 7 August 2026, is the rulebook. From the public road you should get a clear walk to an accessible entrance. Parking should be ordered, with spaces for disability parking-card vehicles close to that entrance and joined to it by a step-free path. On the beach itself the path has to be continuous. Sand means treadmills. Anywhere else, the surface has to be firm and stable. If there are steps, they have to be paired with gentle ramps and handrails, or with a lift or a lift platform. That network has to reach the shade and a point as close to the water as the beach can manage. Adapted toilets, an adapted first-aid post, a lifeguard, and a notice at the entrance and on the council website are part of the same requirement.
Chairs, walkers and crutches for the sand and the water sit on the recommended list. The 2026 award list marks two things separately: bathing-support equipment, and a bathing-support service. A mark for equipment is what the list says was provided. It does not mean a chair will be waiting when you arrive.
In 2026 the programme covers 239 beaches, about 35.6 percent of 671 designated bathing waters. The mainland has 216, the Azores 17 and Madeira 6. Sixty are river or lake beaches and 179 are coastal or transitional. Bathing-support equipment is listed on 214 beaches, and a bathing-support service on 149. The programme began in 2004 and has run on the ground since 2005, with IDiPD, the Portuguese Environment Agency and Turismo de Portugal. Bathing waters for 2026 were set by Ordinance 204-A/2026/1 of 30 April.

Monte Gordo is the Algarve beach to open first if you want both the equipment and the staffed service, plus toilets a very short walk from the sand. Vilamoura is the one close to Faro Airport. Alemães and Maria Luisa are the Albufeira pair: Maria Luisa lists toilets, Alemães does not. Meia Praia has the access listing and the award, and no 2025 water class to quote. Quarteira, also in Loulé on the award list, has equipment and a service, Excellent water in 2025, July sea 21.2°C, and Faro Airport 13.1 km away. Its Blue Flag entry does not say if wheelchair access is provided. Parking is listed. Toilets and showers are listed as no. Porto de Mós in Lagos has equipment, a service, and access on the beach and into the water, July sea 21.2°C, Faro Airport 64.7 km away, and no 2025 water class. The coast is in the Faro guide.

Free entry, a lifeguard, sand, parking and showers. Toilets are listed as no. Excellent in 2025. July sea 19.8°C. Bus stop about 124 metres away. No 2025 water class is published. July sea 19.8°C. Lisbon Airport is 52.6 km away. Grândola, the town named for it, is about 31 km away, so this is not a walk from a town centre. OpenStreetMap shows Estacionamento Praia da Comporta at 416 metres.
- Nazaré. Equipment and a service. Access on the beach and into the water, free entry, a lifeguard, sand, parking, toilets and showers. Excellent in 2025. Carcavelos is the Lisbon-side beach that is both awarded and close to the airport. Go for the award and the parking, and don't assume a wheelchair route from the Blue Flag entry, because that entry is silent on it. Nazaré is the full facilities beach, cooler in July at 19.2°C, and a long way from Lisbon by straight line. Albarquel adds a note on visually impaired access and does not list toilets. The coasts are the Lisbon, Setúbal and Leiria guides.
Salgado, also in Nazaré on the award list, has equipment and no bathing-support service, access on the beach and into the water, Excellent water in 2025 and a July sea of 19.2°C. Baleal-Sul in Peniche has equipment, no service, access on the beach and into the water, Excellent water, July sea 19.2°C, and Lisbon Airport 67.8 km away. Costa Nova in Ílhavo has equipment and a service, Excellent water, July sea 18.7°C, and Porto airport 70.3 km away. Its Blue Flag entry does not say if wheelchair access is provided.
Porto
Agudela, Matosinhos, is the beach on this page that is actually near an airport. Equipment is listed and a bathing-support service is not. The Blue Flag entry lists access on the beach and into the water, free entry, a lifeguard, sand, parking, toilets and showers. Excellent in 2025. June sea 17.3°C, July 18.5°C, August 19.1°C, September 18.7°C. The Praia da Agudela bus stop is about 221 metres away. Francisco de Sá Carneiro Airport is 3.8 km away in a straight line. OpenStreetMap shows parking at 45 metres and public toilets at 89 metres. The water is the coolest on this page. The coast is in the Porto guide.
How we picked these beaches
Portugal has 400 Blue Flag beaches, and 99 of them list wheelchair access on the beach and into the water. The shortlists are beaches that also appear on the 2026 Praia Acessível list. Where the Blue Flag entry does not say if wheelchair access is provided, as at Carcavelos, Costa Nova and Quarteira, the award is described and a step-free route is not assumed.

Questions visitors ask
What does Praia Acessível require?
The 2026 rules require a step-free walk from the public road to an accessible entrance, reserved parking for disability parking-card vehicles close to that entrance, and an accessible path on the beach. Where there is sand, that path includes treadmills. Elsewhere it has to be firm, stable and continuous. Steps have to be paired with gentle ramps with handrails, or with a lift or lift platform. The path has to reach shade and a point as close to the water as possible. Adapted toilets, an adapted first-aid post, a lifeguard, and public information at the entrance and on the municipality website are also required.
Does the award include an amphibious chair?
Not as a requirement. Amphibious chairs, walkers and crutches are recommended, not a condition of the award. The 2026 list has two separate marks: bathing-support equipment, and a bathing-support service. Equipment on the list is not a photograph of a chair. In 2026, equipment was listed on 214 of 239 awarded beaches (89.5 percent), and a bathing-support service on 149 (62.3 percent).
Which of these beaches are close to an airport?
Distances here are straight-line kilometres, not drive times. Agudela is 3.8 km from Francisco de Sá Carneiro Airport in Porto. Quarteira is 13.1 km from Faro, and Vilamoura is 14.3 km from Faro. Carcavelos is 20.5 km from Lisbon Humberto Delgado. Nazaré is 91.1 km from Lisbon. None of those figures is a bus or taxi time.
Is Praia Acessível the same thing as a Blue Flag?
No. Praia Acessível, Praia para Todos! is the Portuguese accessible-beach award, run since 2004 by IDiPD with the Portuguese Environment Agency and Turismo de Portugal. A Blue Flag is the separate annual beach award. This page names beaches that are on the 2026 accessible-beach list and also have a Blue Flag page. Carcavelos, Costa Nova and Quarteira are on the award list, and their Blue Flag entries do not say if wheelchair access is provided, so they are not described here as step-free from that entry.
