Ionian Sea
Greece's western islands and Italy's southern shores
Why Ionian Sea Leads for Blue Flag Beaches
The Ionian Sea — the body of water between Greece's western islands and the toe and heel of Italy — is distinguished by some of the clearest, deepest blue water in the Mediterranean basin. Greece's Ionian Islands (Corfu, Kefalonia, Ithaca, Lefkada, Zakynthos, and the Peloponnese's western coast) account for the majority of certified Ionian beaches, while Italy's Calabrian and southern Puglia coast contributes the remainder. The Ionian is notably calmer than the Aegean, lacking the meltemi wind, and its sand and shingle beaches are among Greece's finest.
🌊 Swimming & conditions
The Ionian is the calmest of Greece's sea bodies — the absence of the meltemi makes summer conditions consistently sheltered. Water temperatures peak at 26–28°C in August. Visibility is exceptional, often exceeding 30m. The sea floor drops steeply off many Ionian Island beaches, creating deep water close to shore.
📅 Best time to visit
May through October — the Ionian's calmer conditions extend the season. Peak July–August.

Ionian Sea Blue Flag Beach FAQs
What makes the Ionian Sea different from the Aegean?
The Ionian and Aegean seas have very different personalities. The Ionian is calmer — it lacks the meltemi wind that can create rough conditions in the Aegean July–August. The Ionian is also deeper (average depth 1,500m vs 500m for the Aegean) and its water has a distinctive deep blue-indigo colour. The Greek islands of the Ionian chain (Corfu, Kefalonia, Zakynthos) are lusher and greener than the Cyclades, thanks to winter rainfall.
Which Ionian Greek islands have Blue Flag beaches?
All six major Ionian Islands have Blue Flag certified beaches. Corfu has the highest total number of certified sites, followed by Kefalonia and Zakynthos. Lefkada is particularly known for its dramatic west-coast beaches (Porto Katsiki, Egremni) — some of the most scenically striking certified beaches in Greece. Ithaca and Paxos have smaller numbers of sites.
Are Ionian Island beaches suitable for families?
The Ionian Islands are among the best Greek destinations for families. The combination of calm water (no strong wind), warm temperatures, shallow entry on many certified beaches, and the full Blue Flag facilities package creates ideal conditions. Corfu has particularly good family infrastructure. Zakynthos combines family beaches with the famous loggerhead turtle nesting sites at Laganas Bay.
How does Italy's Ionian coast compare to the Greek side?
Italy's contribution to the Ionian comes primarily from Calabria and southern Puglia. These are among Italy's least touristy but most scenically impressive coastlines. Water quality is consistently high. The Calabrian Ionian coast is notably quieter than Italian Adriatic resorts, and the Blue Flag beaches of the Ionian side of Puglia (Gallipoli, Leuca) are genuinely world-class with far fewer international visitors.
What is Navagio Beach and does it have Blue Flag certification?
Navagio (Shipwreck Beach) on Zakynthos is one of the most photographed beaches in Greece — an enclosed cove accessible only by boat, featuring a rusting shipwreck on its white sand. Its unique access method means it does not hold Blue Flag certification (which requires manageable access, lifeguard provision, and facilities infrastructure). However, Zakynthos has multiple Blue Flag certified beaches within easy reach.
