Barleycove is a proposed Special Area of Conservation and Natural Heritage Area, and it holds a Blue Flag designation.

Lifeguards are on duty during the bathing season—check the information board at the beach for exact times. The beach is fairly remote. To reach it, take the N71 from Bantry, then the R591 southwest toward Toormore. At Toormore, follow signs for Goleen on the R591. After a few miles, you'll reach a junction: one road heads to Crookhaven, the other to Barleycove.
