Aegean Sea
Greece, Turkey and the islands of exceptional clarity
Why Aegean Sea Leads for Blue Flag Beaches
The Aegean Sea — enclosed between mainland Greece to the west and Turkey to the east — contains some of the world's most photogenic and best-certified coastline. Its roughly 6,000 islands provide an extraordinary diversity of Blue Flag certified beaches: from the famous resorts of Mykonos and Rhodes to quiet mainland coves in Halkidiki and Turkey's Aegean Riviera. Greece's Aegean coast holds the world's highest proportion of Excellent-rated bathing water, while Turkey's Aegean provinces represent some of the country's most pristine certified beaches.
🌊 Swimming & conditions
The Aegean's characteristic summer wind — the meltemi, blowing from the north July through August — keeps air temperatures comfortable but can create choppy conditions on exposed north-facing beaches. Sheltered south and west-facing bays have calmer water. Sea temperatures peak at 25–27°C in August. Water clarity is exceptional, particularly in the Cyclades and Dodecanese — visibility of 20–30m is not uncommon in summer.
📅 Best time to visit
May–June and September–October for calm conditions. July–August warmest but windier in the northern Cyclades.

Aegean Sea Blue Flag Beach FAQs
Does Greece have the best water quality in Europe?
Greece consistently records the highest proportion of Excellent-rated bathing water in Europe. In recent years, 97–98% of all assessed Greek bathing waters have been classified as Excellent under the EU Bathing Water Directive — the highest figure in the EU. Blue Flag certification adds a further layer of management, environmental education, and safety standards on top of this baseline quality.
Which Greek islands have the most Blue Flag beaches?
Rhodes, Crete, and Halkidiki (mainland) have the largest numbers of Blue Flag certified beaches by total site count. In the Cyclades, Paros and Naxos have strong certification numbers relative to their size. Among the Dodecanese, Rhodes and Kos stand out. The Ionian islands (Corfu, Kefalonia, Zakynthos) are covered under the Ionian Sea hub rather than the Aegean.
Are Turkish Aegean beaches as good as Greek ones?
Turkey's Aegean coast — particularly the Bodrum, Çeşme, Foça, and Kuşadası areas — holds hundreds of Blue Flag certified beaches with consistently high water quality. While Greece's Excellent rating percentage is marginally higher overall, Turkey's major Aegean resort beaches are certified to the same 33-criterion standard. Many travellers find the Turkish Aegean coast less crowded and more affordable than the equivalent Greek islands, while offering comparable certified quality.
What is the meltemi and how does it affect swimming?
The meltemi is the Aegean's prevailing summer wind, blowing from the north or northwest predominantly in July and August. It typically strengthens mid-afternoon and drops at night. On exposed north-facing beaches in the Cyclades and northern Dodecanese, the meltemi can create strong waves unsuitable for casual swimming. South-facing beaches on the same islands are almost entirely sheltered from it. When choosing an Aegean beach in peak summer, checking the aspect (which direction it faces) is more important than the weather forecast.
Can I visit multiple Aegean islands easily with Blue Flag beaches?
The Greek ferry network is one of the most developed in Europe, with regular connections between Athens' Piraeus port and virtually all Aegean islands. High-speed ferries connect major islands in 3–5 hours from Athens. Island-hopping between certified beaches is a popular approach: the Cyclades loop (Paros, Naxos, Mykonos), the Dodecanese chain (Rhodes, Kos, Patmos), and the Northern Aegean all have convenient ferry connections.
