About Elena
Elena Papadaki is a coastal geographer based in Athens and Zeach's authority on Blue Flag beaches across the Aegean and Adriatic. Her coverage spans Greece's 627 certified beaches — spread across the Ionian Islands, Cyclades, Dodecanese, Crete, and the mainland peninsula — as well as the full Adriatic coastline from Italy's Puglia to Montenegro's Bay of Kotor.
Greece has held more Blue Flag beaches per kilometre of coastline than almost any other country for over two decades, and Elena's work focuses on understanding why: the relationship between tourist infrastructure investment, municipal governance, and water quality maintenance across thousands of island communities with vastly different resources.
Greek island expertise
Each Greek island group presents different Blue Flag dynamics. The Cyclades — Mykonos, Santorini, Paros, Naxos — have high tourism pressure that tests water quality infrastructure heavily in peak season. The Dodecanese islands near the Turkish coast have strong certification track records driven partly by competition with Turkish resorts across the Aegean. Crete has a distinct certification profile: large organised beaches in the north versus quieter, harder-to-certify coves in the south.
Elena understands these regional distinctions at a level that generic travel content doesn't capture. Her pages reflect what each beach is actually like — not just that it has a flag, but what that flag represents in that specific coastal context.
Adriatic and Italian coastlines
Italy's 566 Blue Flag beaches span both the Adriatic east coast (Emilia-Romagna, Marche, Abruzzo, Puglia) and the Tyrrhenian west coast (Tuscany, Lazio, Campania, Calabria). Elena covers the full Italian programme with particular depth on the Adriatic, where organised beach concessions (stabilimenti balneari) create a management model unlike anywhere else in the Mediterranean.
Croatia's Dalmatian coast has become one of the fastest-growing Blue Flag programmes in Europe, with new certifications across the Dalmatian islands each year. Elena tracks the Croatian national operator's annual certification announcements and cross-references them against her field knowledge of the coast.
